How does a mosquito and tick repellent work?

Anti-mosquito repellent active ingredients, such as Icaridin, act by blocking the olfactory systems of mosquitoes that "detect" the emissions from human skin (such as lactic acid and CO²).Disturbed, disoriented and unable to find their target's skin, the mosquitoes cannot bite.
